簡單來說，「湊十法」就是將20以內的進位加法轉換成 (分解成 )10加幾的算術題，是一種相對上簡單的算術方法。例如當我們知道數字的分解和組合，即1+9=10，2+8=10 等這些簡單的「湊十法」法則基礎，我們可以再把5分拆為2和3，那麼當我們要計算8+5的時候，我們第一步只需先把5分拆為2和3，然後再把8和2組合起來得出10，最後＋3就等於13了，步驟如下:


  1.  8 + 5 = 
  2.  8 + (2+3) = 
  3. (8 + 2) + 3  = 
  4. 10 + 3 = 13

「湊十法」步驟多一些，但是運作比較簡單，因此心算時運用的時間則短，個人認為這個方法對小朋友來說既簡單且又容易理解，「湊十法」的訓練能夠讓孩子輕輕鬆鬆練習10以上 (20以內) 的加數，從而獲得成功感和自信感，培養數感激發數學潛能。
